Return of Internet in Yemen Is Technical Victory for Public Telecommunications Corporation
News - Yemen: The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology confirmed Tuesday that the return of the Internet in Yemen is a technical victory of the Public Telecommunications Corporation and TeleYemen.
Taha Zabara explained to Almasirah TV that despite the lack of equipment, the teams of the Public Telecommunications Corporation and TeleYemen worked under the threat of the repeated US-Saudi airstrikes and succeeded in restoring the internet service.
He pointed out that targeting telecommunication networks in the governorates is part of the systematic targeting of the Yemeni infrastructure, and the telecommunications sector is among the most affected.
He stated that the indirect impact of the interruption of Internet services was catastrophic and will have repercussions in the coming period.
Zabara said, "We are facing great suffering in the technical sector due to the lack of equipment and expertise as a result of the continued US-Saudi siege," adding that the Yemeni technical cadres are developing themselves with the least capabilities and achieving important achievements.
He pointed out that restarting Internet services with full quality requires advanced equipment that is not available, calling on the United Nations to assure the entry of this equipment.
The US-Saudi aggression bombed a telecommunications hub in Yemen’s port city of Hodiedah last week, causing a nationwide internet blackout for four days.
The incident has severely limited independent media and human rights monitoring efforts. Observers say the attack appears a deliberate move by the Saudi-led coalition to keep the world in the dark about the extent of death and destruction resulting from its airstrikes in Yemen.
