ICSRF Calls for Disclosure of Saudi Activist Forcibly Disappeared Fate

News - Middle East: The International Center for Supporting Rights and Freedoms (ICSRF) called on the Saudi authorities to immediately reveal the fate of human rights defender Asma Al-Subaie, in light of her being subjected to enforced disappearance.

The center said in a statement that Saudi Arabia was known to be one of the dangerous places for human rights defenders to work. Despite that, Al-Subaie continued to advocate for women's rights and support women who are subjected to domestic violence.

The center stated that Al-Subaie had human rights claims and opinions on social media, but the Saudi security was on the lookout for her. Her family's home was stormed, and after its residents were intimidated and her electronic devices were seized, they arrested her and took her to an unknown location in June 2021.

The Human Rights Center warned that Saudi Arabia had violated Saudi internal law before violating international law. According to Saudi internal law, the security authorities have violated the Code of Criminal Procedure, as Article 2 of the Code of Criminal Procedure states that:

“No person shall be arrested, searched, detained, or imprisoned except in cases specified by the law. Detention or imprisonment shall be carried out only in the places designated for such purposes and shall be for the period prescribed by the competent authority. A person under arrest shall not be subjected to any bodily or moral harm. Similarly, he shall not be subjected to any torture or degrading treatment.”

Article 3 also states that: ”No penal punishment shall be imposed on any person except in connection with a forbidden and punishable act, whether under Shari’ah principles or under statutory laws, and after the person has been convicted pursuant to a final judgment rendered after a trial conducted in accordance with Shari’ah principles.”

According to international law, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a member of the international community and has violated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provides in article 9 that “no one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile”

The International Center for Supporting Rights and Freedoms called on the Saudi authorities to reveal the fate of the activist Al-Subaie and release her and all opponents and all human rights activists detained in the kingdom's prisons.

It stressed the necessity of not attacking any of the opponents and human rights activists because of their defense of rights and freedoms and the demand for reform and unblocking the websites of human rights organizations.
