Chances of Extending Truce Determined by US-Saudi Commitment to Implement Its Terms

News - Yemen: A relentless pursuit by the UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, to  stabilize the humanitarian and military truce, which is about to expire, in light of the existence of thorny issues stipulated in the terms of the truce that have not been implemented.

Among these issues are prisoner exchange and obstruction of the arrival of oil derivatives, as well as the continuous military violations by the US-Saudi aggression, which during the past 45 days amounted to 4473 violations.

The UN envoy said on Tuesday before the Security Council that talks are taking place with the two parties to ensure the extension of the truce.

The Sana’a party, which showed its seriousness towards peace by adhering to the terms of the current truce since the beginning of its entry into effect on the 2nd of April until today, confirmed that the request to extend the truce is under study, bearing in mind the extent of the coalition’s commitment to the provisions of the current truce.

On the other side, the coalition of aggression continues its intransigence in implementing the truce and continues to obstruct the prisoners' aspect and the entry of oil ships in addition to military breaches. It requires serious action by the United Nations and to put pressure on the coalition to implement its obligations agreed upon in accordance with the truce during the rest of the truce period,  including compensation for the number of ships and flights. This is what Sana’a requested from the United Nations to ensure the extension of the truce.

Thus, Sana’a has thrown the ball into the court of the United Nations and put its credibility on the line. In the event that the UN does not prove its credibility and put pressure on the coalition to implement its obligations, it bears the responsibility of wasting opportunities to extend the truce and move towards achieving peace in Yemen.
