Three Months of UN-Sponsored Truce, US-Saudi backed Government Not Serious in Implementing Peace in Yemen

Yemen: Nearly three months of the UN-sponsored truce have passed, however, there are no indications establishing peace paths in Yemen as a result of the US-Saudi intransigence and obstruction to the implementation of the terms of the truce and its failure to fulfill its obligations stipulated in last April.

The deal stipulates halting offensive military operations, including cross-border attacks, and allowing fuel-laden ships to enter Yemen’s lifeline al-Hudaydah port and commercial flights in and out of the airport in the capital Sana’a "to predetermined destinations in the region."

Obstruction of Flights

Since the beginning of the truce and until today, the number of flights that have flown to and from Sanaa International Airport has not exceeded 12, and all this is due to the intransigence and obstruction of the US-Saudi party, which is still procrastinating in implementing these flights, especially the flights agreed to be operated to and from Cairo International Airport, where only one flight was implemented.

Director of Sana’a International Airport Khaled Al-Shayef confirmed that the number of flights agreed to be implemented during the two truce periods “25” includes flights that were not implemented during the first armistice period, which was supposed to be implemented retroactively during the second period, but the aggression’s procrastination and obstruction of flights continued.

The US-Saudi aggression was not satisfied with obstructing the conduct of flights, but rather deliberately not scheduling the flights, as well as not announcing them in sufficient time, which lost the opportunity to travel in front of many citizens due to their inability to book for the flight.

Negative role of the UN

Since the beginning of the truce, the position of the United Nations has remained negative and it has not done its duty to pressure the US-Saudi party to implement its obligations regarding flights. It did not accept adding flights that were not implemented during the first truce period to the flights agreed to be implemented during the current truce period, despite Sana’a’s continuing demands.

The obstruction of flights hampered the plans of the Supreme Medical Committee in Sana’a, according to the head of the committee, Dr. Mutahar al-Darwish, who explained that after the extension of the UN-sponsored truce, it was scheduled to travel 1,600 patients distributed on 16 flights, but the coalition’s obstruction prevented travel to many patients, especially to Cairo.

The Director of Sana'a International Airport, Khaled Al-Shayef, also confirmed that the delay in implementing Yemeni flights to and from Sana'a International Airport increases the suffering of patients and causes great losses for the Yemeni residents who flocked to Egypt and Jordan to wait for the flights to be implemented.

No Excuses for Delay

Al-Shayef confirmed that Sanaa airport is fully prepared and there are no justifications for delaying flights. He stressed that the airport administration did not receive any conditions or notes to be carried out.

He pointed out that the United Nations and other organizations remained silent about obstructing the flights to and from Sanaa airport by the US-Saudi aggression, pointing out that the UN organizations are not concerned with opening the airport to the Yemeni citizen because they enjoy the freedom to use the airport and their flights arrive continuously.

Road Opening Issue

Despite the passage of two rounds of discussions in the Jordanian capital about opening roads, the road issue is still stumbling as a result of the aggression’s rejection of the initiatives presented by Sana’a, as well as setting impossible conditions that confirm its indifference to the suffering of citizens as much as it is keen to achieve political and partisan gains.

In contrast to the coalition side, the National side showed serious and eagerness to alleviate the suffering of the citizens and open the roads. After the failure of the two rounds of discussions in Jordan, the head of its military committee, Major General Yahya Al-Razami, announced its readiness to open three roads in Taiz.

Detention of Fuel Tankers

The terms of the armistice stipulated that 18 fuel tankers would enter the port of Hodeidah during the first period of truce, however, despite obtaining United Nations permits, the fuel tankers are detained by the US-Saudi aggression for days and weeks, and the UN did not play any role regarding acts of piracy on fuel tankers, according to what was confirmed by Yemen Petroleum Company in Sana'a.

Military Violations

Although the terms of the truce stipulate the cessation of all military operations, the coalition forces continued their military violations of the truce, bringing their violations during the 87 days of the truce to 9.771 violations, a number that reveals the extent of the coalition’s disregard for the truce and their lack of seriousness in achieving peace in Yemen.

Observers confirmed that the coalition’s continuous violations and non-fulfillment of its obligations stipulated in the UN-sponsored truces, as well as the negativity of the United Nations, which sponsors the truce, turning a blind eye to the violations, are all indicators that do not establish the peace process.
