This came in a brief statement of the European Union Mission in Yemen, on the occasion of the International Day of Peace, on September 21.
It stated that "the European Union remains committed to supporting a comprehensive political solution that leads to the achievement of lasting peace in Yemen."
The Union called on the Yemeni parties to engage constructively with the UN envoy, saying: “The Yemeni parties should continue to engage constructively with the UN envoy Hans Grundberg and his proposals to extend the ongoing ceasefire and turn it into a lasting peace.”
The EU supported Saudi Arabia, the United States and regional allies, launching the war on Yemen in March 2015, with the claim of bringing the government of former Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi back to power.
The war has left hundreds of thousands of Yemenis dead, and displaced millions more. It has also destroyed Yemen’s infrastructure and spread famine and infectious diseases there.
The EU countries needed a practical view of the Yemeni reality, away from Riyadh, which is trying to draw the boundaries of attitudes towards Yemen.
As for Britain and France, they are concerned with stopping support for the coalition of aggression before issuing pro forma statements through which they are trying to absolve themselves of the mercenaries' actions, and to refrain from getting involved in the project of occupying and tearing Yemen apart.
What is remarkable is that the UN has not issued a clear position regarding the peace. This silence raises many questions about the nature of the tasks carried out by the UN apart from the more complex humanitarian issue.
The UN envoy is concentrating his efforts within the pressures that are being exerted against Sana’a with regard to extending the truce that the Yemeni people benefited nothing from.
