Foreign Affairs:  War against Yemen Tragic Legacy, Washington Should Stop Arms Sales to Riyadh

News – Yemen: Foreign Affairs published a report by By Stephen Pomper and Michael Wahid Hanna, in which they said that the parties to the conflict in Yemen achieved an achievement by signing the armistice after the eight-year war, which greatly reduced the fighting that pushed an already poor country into a huge humanitarian crisis.

Some observers have allowed themselves to hope that it may be a first step toward a broader peace process. They believe that in the best-case scenario, this could lead to a political settlement of the conflict between the Ansarallah and the coalition that receives logistical, intelligence and weapons support from Washington for most of the war. But the armistice agreement, which was extended twice, expired on October 2.

The report said: For US President Joe Biden, the war in Yemen is a tragic legacy and an uncomfortable end. When Biden took office, he did not hide his desire to quickly disengage the United States militarily from the conflict; But it is easier to help start a war than to help end it.

The report indicated that the end of the truce shows the long-term challenges faced by peacemakers in Yemen. It is unclear if the current impasse will lead to a dramatic new escalation by either side, but if it does, there is no clear path to peace.

The report noted the importance of the American role in ending the war on Yemen, as the United States must learn what it can from its adventure in Yemen. This means that policymakers must develop internal safeguards that can help steer the country away from becoming party to such disasters in the future.

Obviously, US policy was not the main driver behind the April Armistice and subsequent developments. The breakthrough was mainly attributed to the parties themselves, which by then had fought to a stalemate and were ready to rest. By mid-2021, both Riyadh and Abu Dhabi began looking for new ways to manage their security concerns, following a US decision to halt arms sales. Temporarily, but soon America returned to the resumption of arms sales.

The report touched on the disappointment that accompanied the extension of the truce, as efforts to expand and extend the truce faltered in recent months, after the coalition refused to pay the salaries of employees, using oil export revenues.

The report states that members of Congress are calling for it to halt all arms sales to Riyadh. Washington can draw lessons from its adventure in Yemen. The United States already knows that its support for the Saudis has proven counterproductive, in addition to contributing to terrible suffering, it has helped cause the strategic reversals it has sought. to prevent it.

The report concluded by saying that going back to early 2015, before the United States began helping Saudi Arabia bomb Yemen, the best Washington could do was help Yemen find peace while preventing itself from repeating the same mistakes in the future.
