Yemen's Foreign Ministry Strongly Condemns Desecration of Holy Quran in Sweden

News - Yemen: Yemen’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden.

According to reports, Swedish right-wing leader Rasmus Paludan received permission from his country's government to burn the Holy Qur’an in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. He was protected by the police while committing the act.

“The act of burning copies of the Holy Qur’an is a crime and a provocative incitement to more than two billion Muslims in various continents of the world,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Saturday.

The statement warned of the consequences of such provocations. It stressed that this populist discourse is considered one of the forms of violence and terrorism that Western countries claim to fight in their literature and laws before the world.

The statement called on the Swedish and Danish authorities to investigate this crime and hold accountable those responsible for extremist groups.

“What is happening is in no way related to the freedom of opinion and expression and the freedom of belief that Western countries repeat on a daily basis,” it added.

It stressed the importance of governments, international and regional governmental organizations and institutions, and non-governmental organizations fulfilling their responsibilities to respect human rights, and to take deterrent measures against planners and perpetrators of acts of violence and incitement against religions.

“Such acts destabilize social peace and spread hatred among peoples.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the need to adopt a binding resolution criminalizing all forms of hatred and extremism, and to hold perpetrators accountable.

Back in April, the Swedish right-wing leader Rasmus Paludan tried to burn a copy of the Qur’an in a heavily-populated Muslim area.

Paludan, accompanied by police, went to an open public space in the southern Swedish city of Linkoping and reportedly placed the Muslim holy book down and tried to set it on fire while ignoring protests from onlookers.

Sweden's foreign minister Tobias Billström condemned hatred towards Muslims, but emphasized there were certain freedoms in his country.

"Islamophobic provocations are appalling," he tweeted. "Sweden has a far-reaching freedom of expression, but it does not imply that the Swedish Government, or myself, support the opinions expressed."
