The L'antidiplomatico newspaper pointed that death and destruction in Yemen would not have been possible without the political and armaments support of the United States and Britain in the first place.
In addition to thousands of deaths, famine, the cholera epidemic, embargo, destruction of infrastructure, Yemen's artistic heritage has also suffered incalculable damage from Saudi bombing.
The newspaper noted that the ancient walls of Sana'a dating back to about 2500 years ago, which was mentioned in a documentary by Pier Paolo Pasolini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, and other Yemen's artistic heritage, almost everything has gone to dust by the Saudi regime.
In recent days, the report added, Yemen's head of antiquities, manuscripts and museums, Obbad bin Ali Al-Hayyal, visited several historical and archaeological sites in Marib and Jawf provinces to assess the damage caused by the Yemeni army, Saba News Agency reported.
Hayyal and his team visited the ancient city of Baraqish in the Mazjar district of Marib, the Rusf temple in Al-Jawf and many other archaeological sites.
Saba has received information from local authorities about damage to ancient columns, inscriptions and structures by Saudi and Emirati warplanes, as well as the looting and theft of antiquities and artifacts by coalition forces from museums in all over the world country.
During the visit, Hayyal stressed the importance of "integrating official and popular efforts" to protect these sites from "vandalism and looting".
In May 2015, US-Saudi airstrikes hit the ancient Sabaean ruins of the Marib High Dam, which date back to the 7th century BC.
That year, the US-Saudi aggression bombed the ruins of the ancient city of Baraqish, several ancient temples and an entire museum filled with countless precious artifacts - which has been "reduced to piles of crushed stones," the The Intercept reported in 2015.
Since then several ancient buildings and structures have collapsed due to weakened foundations. As of October 2019, more than 237 archaeological sites had been directly targeted by the US-Saudi aggression in what has been described as a systematic campaign to deliberately erase Yemeni culture and history.
Aside from the bombings, several ancient sites and museums have been looted and stripped of valuable artifacts by UAE-backed mercenary groups, whose ranks are filled with Daesh and Al-Qaeda militants.
In 2019, a member of Yemen's Supreme Political Council, Mohammad Ali al-Houthi, lamented about the UAE-backed groups: “The mercenaries are thieves of antiquities. Where did the antiquities of the Marib Museum go? … Where are the monuments of the museums in the occupied governorates? … The mercenaries are committing historical, social and cultural crimes”.
The report of the Italian newspaper concluded that there has always been a complicit silence from the media and Western governments on this latest crime against Yemen.
