EU to Hold Joint Naval Drills to Protect Critical Marine Infrastructure: Report

News - World: The European Union is looking to hold joint maritime patrols and naval exercises as part of plans to protect critical marine infrastructure, according to the EU environment policy chief, amid heightened tensions with Russia.

Concerns about security threats facing the bloc's maritime infrastructure were heightened by attacks in September on the Nord Stream pipelines, which resulted in the closure of the pipelines, and further cut Europe’s gas supplies.

The attacks, according to American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, were carried out by the United States.

The EU is about to publish an updated maritime security strategy on Friday, which will outline its plans to hold an annual naval exercise.

Virginijus Sinkevičius, the EU environment commissioner, was quoted as saying on Friday by the Financial Times that the plan was underway before the Nord Stream blasts but had been strengthened in response to them.

“After what happened with Nord Stream, [we need] increased monitoring and protecting [of] critical maritime infrastructure and ships from physical and cyber threats,” Sinkevičius told the newspaper.

The EU also plans to increase cooperation with the NATO military alliance, including expanding coastal patrols and improving data sharing between countries to identify threats early, such as by using EU satellite programs to detect unidentified vessels.

Sweden, Germany and Denmark are investigating the blasts on the Nord Stream pipelines, which were constructed to supply Russian gas to Europe. They have pointed out that the explosions were deliberate, but have not said who might be responsible.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that the European Union is completely ignoring any talks on the need to carry out an investigation of the Nord Stream gas pipeline blasts.

"We continue to demand a quick and transparent investigation, we continue to demand that we be allowed to take part in this investigation," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters at a regular Kremlin briefing.

"It is necessary to identify who executed it and who ordered it. Committing a terrorist attack against a piece of critical international energy infrastructure is too dangerous a precedent," he added.

The New York Times this week reported that US officials were looking into whether a pro-Ukrainian non-government group was responsible for the blasts, whereas, Germany also believes the same.

"As for the pro-Ukrainian angle, you know the idea that some Dr. Evil organized it, that's hard to believe. It was too difficult a task, which probably only a well-trained special state service was capable of - and there are not too many of them in our world," Peskov said.

According to reports, the operation to place explosives on the seabed with the intention to destroy the pipeline was carried out by six people, who sailed from Rostock on Sept. 6 and were later located on the Danish island of Christiansö.
