Newsweek: Poverty Kills about 200,000 Americans Annually

News – World: The American magazine “Newsweek” stated in a report published today, Monday, that a recent published study indicated that the United States suffers from “self-injustice” when it comes to poverty, as the rich get richer, while thousands who live without sufficient resources die every year in the United States.

Research conducted by the University of California found that the deaths of 183,000 Americans ages 15 and older in 2019 alone could be attributed to poverty, which is triggered when per capita income is less than 50% of the median income in the United States.

The average American household income was $69,560 in 2019, and the US Census Bureau estimated, in the same year, that about 34 million Americans, making up 10.5% of the population, live in poverty, according to the study.

Poverty continues to be a major problem in the United States, as a Newsweek survey conducted in partnership with the research and polling firm "Redfield & Wilton Strategies" indicated that the country suffers from poverty much more than in other countries with similar levels of distributed wealth. , which is a source of concern for most Americans.

The poll, which was conducted on a sample of 1,500 eligible voters in the United States, found that about 53% of Americans are "very concerned" about the level of poverty in the country.

Also, 21% of Americans who responded to the survey stated that they do not earn enough money from their primary job to pay the bills or maintain their family's standard of living, while 52% work in multiple jobs to meet the daily costs of living.

The age group that includes the largest percentage of people in the survey, who perform more than one job, ranges between 35 and 44 years, with 77% of the participants working in several jobs.

"Newsweek" indicated that the level of poverty in the United States is a direct result of the weak social policies pursued by the government, which is a direct result of the weakness of political actors.
