The CIA and the US military helped him establish Moby Group, enter Afghanistan, and form Lapis as part of the group. Lapis also opened branches in various countries, including Yemen, where a branch was opened in collaboration with a Yemeni businessman with CIA ties, who also has strong connections with the US embassy and owns a group of companies.
The Yemen branch was inaugurated by a British woman named Sarah Cunningham, who was presented as the founder of Lapis. The company was established in Yemen in 2013, and the spy Abdul Moain Azan worked as the director of the Yemen office from March 2015.
According to Azan, the company serves as one of the soft arms of the CIA, working on two main tracks in Yemen. The first track involves collecting information, conducting studies and surveys in various fields such as politics, economics, culture, and development. The second track involves launching media campaigns aimed at changing public opinions and influencing public sentiment in the countries where the company operates.
A comprehensive study of Yemeni media was one of the intelligence activities carried out by Lapis in Yemen. According to Azan, the company prepared landscape reports, which involved an extensive study of the Yemeni media scene. This included examining various media channels, whether audio, visual, or print, both government-affiliated and independent, including entertainment media. The reports categorized these channels based on popularity, content, and orientation (political, independent, etc.).
Azan added that the study included all forms of Yemeni media, such as TV channels, radio stations, print journalism, online platforms, and influential personalities affecting public opinion. The objective was to identify the preferences and tendencies of Yemeni citizens and determine the most influential media and the language most acceptable to them. This information was used to send messages aimed at changing the beliefs of Yemeni citizens.
Another activity mentioned by Azan involved preparing and executing extensive media campaigns based on the results of the Yemeni media landscape studies. These campaigns utilized various media forms, including print, audio, visual, and electronic media, and social media. The goal was to influence and change public opinions on specific issues.
Azan also mentioned that Lapis conducted studies targeting Yemeni consumer preferences and purchasing power. These studies identified the products most desired by Yemeni consumers and shared the findings with American and British traders to help them market their goods in Yemen successfully.
In 2017, Lapis implemented a project in Yemen on peace journalism, funded by the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) in Washington through a project managed by IREX, an American organization operating in Jordan. The project's activities, including workshops and training sessions, were carried out simultaneously in Sana'a and Aden. The project aimed to attract journalists from different media outlets in areas controlled by Sanaa and those outside their control, using them later as influential individuals to change public opinions.
Azan concluded by mentioning that the studies carried out by Lapis focused primarily on gathering information about Yemeni citizens' preferences, challenges, and preferred communication methods. This information was shared with entities such as the US Department of Defense and the CIA and could be utilized for military, security, political, or economic purposes.
Recently, Yemeni Security Forces announced the dismantling of a significant espionage network working for the United States and Israel. This network had been involved in espionage and sabotage activities across various state institutions for decades.
According to a statement from the Security Forces, the network was directly linked to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and had obtained sensitive information about various aspects of life in Yemen, including military, security, economic, agricultural, health, and educational fields.
