In a statement, the Union condemned the ongoing crimes and violations against journalists and media workers in Gaza, affirming its full solidarity with all media colleagues in Palestine and Lebanon.
It pointed out that since the beginning of the U.S.-Israeli aggression after October 7, 2023, more than 158 journalists and media professionals working in Palestine and Lebanon have been martyred in deliberate targeting, marking the highest violation rate by any country in the world.
The statement highlighted the Israeli enemy's targeting on Wednesday of a group of journalists who were performing their duties near Abu Shurkh roundabout in northern Gaza, in an airstrike that directly hit them. This resulted in the martyrdom of Mohammed Al-Tannani, a photographer for Al-Aqsa TV, the injury of Al Jazeera cameraman Fadi Al-Wahidi, and the injury of correspondent Tamer Labed.
The statement mentioned that the situation faced by journalists in Gaza or southern Lebanon necessitates greater efforts from the free international community to protect them while carrying out their media duties.
It also noted that some international organizations concerned with freedom of opinion and expression and the protection of journalists have accused the Israeli enemy of committing grave violations against journalists deliberately and directly, yet it remains unpunished.
The statement stressed that many international organizations responsible for protecting human rights, especially the United Nations and the Security Council, along with organizations dedicated to freedom of opinion and expression and the protection of journalists during wars, including the Human Rights Council, continue to turn a blind eye to what journalists are facing in Palestine, making them complicit in the violations committed by the Israeli enemy against civilians and journalists in the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian health ministry has estimated that at least 175 journalists were killed between October 7, 2023 and October 6, 2024.
Experts of the United Nations have warned about “the extraordinarily high numbers of journalists and media workers who have been killed, attacked, injured and detained in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”
Media workers have taken an unprecedented toll since Israel launched its savage campaign following Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, 2023.
