UN Report: Israel Demolishes 1,528 Palestinian Structures in West Bank in 2024
News - Middle East: The United Nations has reported that Israeli forces demolished 1,528 Palestinian structures in the occupied West Bank between January 1 and November 29, 2024.
According to data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), these demolitions have displaced 3,637 Palestinians and impacted 163,769 others.
Details of the Demolished Structures
The destruction included: 700 inhabited homes, 118 uninhabited homes, 398 agricultural facilities, and 205 livelihood-related structures, such as shops and other establishments.
The Tulkarm Refugee Camp in the northern West Bank was the most affected, with 171 demolitions, followed by: 118 demolitions in Nur Shams Camp in Tulkarm, 83 in Jenin Camp, and 70 in Jericho, with smaller numbers across other areas.
Escalation Amid Gaza War
The increase in demolitions coincided with Israel's ongoing war in Gaza. According to the Jerusalem Governorate, Israeli forces carried out 391 demolitions of homes and structures in Jerusalem since the start of the Gaza conflict in October 2023.
Israeli forces and settlers have intensified attacks against Palestinians and their properties in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. This campaign has resulted in 800 deaths and 6,450 injuries, according to Palestinian authorities.
Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis
Meanwhile, in Gaza, the Israeli offensive, backed by the United States, has led to over 149,000 casualties, with most victims being women and children. More than 11,000 remain missing, amidst widespread destruction, famine, and the deaths of children and elderly due to starvation. This has created one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises.
The demolitions and violence form part of a broader strategy aimed at displacing Palestinians and seizing their lands for Israeli settlers, exacerbating an already dire situation across the occupied territories.
