Yemeni Foreign Minister Urges UN Mission to Monitor Escalations in Hodeidah

News - Yemen: The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in the Sana’a, Jamal Amer, has called on the United Nations Mission to Support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA) to fulfill its responsibility in monitoring military, political, and financial escalations by the opposing party, which suggest preparations for potential military actions.

The remarks were made during a meeting in Sana’a with the Head of UNMHA, General Michael Beary, and his deputy, Maria Yamashita.

During the meeting, Minister Amer emphasized that UNMHA has been provided with all necessary support by the government and the military committee to facilitate its monitoring of the Stockholm Agreement's implementation.

He stressed that the mission's geographic scope is strictly limited to the city of Hodeidah and its districts, as outlined in the agreement, and that any attempt to extend its operations beyond this scope would be unacceptable.

He clarified that any measures taken by Sana’a are purely defensive. “The government’s directive is not to initiate any military action but to remain vigilant and act in self-defense if necessary,” he added.

For his part, General Michael Beary reaffirmed UNMHA's commitment to its mandate and geographic scope as defined by the Stockholm Agreement. He expressed gratitude to the Sana’a government and the military committee for their ongoing support of the UN mission.

The continuous violations by the forces of aggression in Hodeidah come in light of an international silence identifying the aggression and its crimes against the Yemeni people.

Saudi Arabia, backed by the United States and regional allies, launched the war on Yemen in March 2015, claiming the goal of bringing the government of former Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi back to power.

The US-Saudi aggression continues to target neighborhoods and populated areas and destroy the infrastructure and capabilities of the country, in light of a suspicious international silence.

The war has left hundreds of thousands of Yemenis dead and displaced millions more. It has also destroyed Yemen’s infrastructure and spread famine and infectious diseases there.

During a round of UN-sponsored peace negotiations in Sweden in December 2018, a UN-backed agreement reached between the warring sides named Stockholm Agreement.

The agreement committed the parties to an immediate ceasefire in the city of Hodeidah and the ports of Hodeidah, Salif and Ras Issa, redeployment of forces, securing the ports, the establishment of the joint Redeployment Coordination Committee chaired by the United Nations, and the use of the revenues of the ports to support civil service salary payments.
