January 31: A Dark Day in Yemen’s History of War and Atrocities

Yemen: For years, Yemen has been subjected to relentless aggression by the US-Saudi aggression, resulting in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

Among the many dark days in Yemen’s history, January 31 stands out as a date marked by horrific war crimes and acts of genocide. Across multiple years—2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022—this day has witnessed deadly airstrikes, mass civilian casualties, and the destruction of vital infrastructure.

The attacks have been indiscriminate, targeting homes, markets, mosques, farms, and even media institutions. Reports from various Yemeni governorates—including Saada, Sana’a, ‘Amran, Hodeidah, and Hajjah—detail the devastation inflicted upon innocent civilians.

2016: US-Saudi warplanes bombed residential areas in the Baqim district of Saada, leading to multiple deaths and injuries. The assault displaced numerous families, forcing them to flee their homes in search of safety.

2017: Airstrikes targeted various civilian sites, including a mosque, an agricultural nursery, a local radio station, and a public road. The attacks in Saada and Hodeidah left widespread destruction and fueled public outrage.

2019: In one of the deadliest attacks, coalition warplanes struck a bustling market in ‘Amran, killing and injuring civilians. In Sana’a, a home was bombed, while in Hajjah, an airstrike destroyed a vehicle on a public road.

2022: An old radio camp in Sana’a became the latest target, with airstrikes causing extensive damage to surrounding residential neighborhoods, further spreading fear and panic among civilians.

A Pattern of War Crimes
The use of internationally banned cluster bombs, the destruction of non-military sites, and the deliberate targeting of civilians violate international humanitarian laws. Despite widespread condemnation, these attacks have continued unabated, deepening Yemen’s suffering. The destruction of infrastructure has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, making access to food, healthcare, and other essentials even more difficult.

Eyewitnesses and survivors describe scenes of horror—children buried under rubble, families torn apart, and entire communities left in ruins. The psychological and economic impact of these attacks has left deep scars on Yemen’s population.

Calls for Accountability
The international community has largely failed to take meaningful action to stop the war and hold the perpetrators accountable. While humanitarian organizations have called for an end to the blockade and unrestricted aid access, millions of Yemenis continue to face starvation, disease, and displacement.

These ongoing atrocities demand urgent international attention. Without accountability and justice, the suffering of Yemen’s people will persist, and the cycle of violence will continue. It is imperative that world leaders, human rights organizations, and legal bodies take decisive action to end the war, lift the blockade, and bring those responsible for war crimes to justice.
