Human Rights Center Condemns the Torture and Killing of Detained Poet in Saudi-Backed Prisons

News - Yemen: The Humanity Eye Rights and Development Center has strongly condemned the torture and killing of detained poet Rashid Alawi Al-Hattam inside the prisons of coalition-affiliated forces in Marib.

The center denounced the poet’s arrest and subsequent abuse, stating that his detention and torture were solely due to his anti-U.S. and anti-Israel slogans, calling it a blatant violation of human values and ethics.

"Torture to death constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law, which explicitly criminalizes the killing or torture of detainees, labeling such acts as war crimes," the statement read.

The organization further asserted that this crime is part of a broader pattern of killings, executions, and torture inflicted upon detainees and prisoners by mercenaries affiliated with the Saudi-led coalition.

Holding the US-Saudi coalition forces fully responsible for this crime and its precedents, the center called for criminal accountability and investigation into the coalition leadership and all those complicit in such violations.

The center reiterated its call for the formation of an independent international investigation committee to probe all crimes committed against the Yemeni people.

Activists confirmed that Al-Hattam died as a direct result of the brutal torture inflicted upon him, despite mediation efforts and testimonies from his followers and companions. They stated that his chanting of the “Sarkha” slogan during a live broadcast, coinciding with the Gaza ceasefire announcement, was purely spontaneous and driven by overwhelming joy, with no affiliation to any political factions.

The victim’s family held the Islah Party mercenaries in Marib fully responsible for his death. Activists and pro-aggression poets noted that just days before his murder, he had recited a poem praising the mercenary Sultan Al-Arada.

With this crime, the Islah Party has once again demonstrated its ongoing campaign of killing, kidnapping, imprisoning, and torturing those who oppose the American and Zionist agendas. Furthermore, its militias continue their routine practice of arbitrarily arresting passersby and travelers, subjecting them to severe torture without any legal justification.

Many citizens have reported cases of kidnapping, extortion, and robbery while traveling through occupied Marib, particularly along the Al-Abr route. Armed gangs, reportedly supported by mercenary authorities, frequently abduct, loot, and even kill travelers.

These actions in the occupied provinces constitute war crimes and blatant violations of international human rights and humanitarian law. However, human rights organizations have largely remained silent on these atrocities.
