The appalling massacre occurred during the night of Friday into Saturday when armed men staged an incursion into the northern town of Solhan in the African country’s volatile Yagha province.
Late Friday, the assailants killed 14 people in the village of Tadaryat in the same region, where Takfiri terrorists linked to al-Qaeda and Daesh terror groups have been targeting civilians and troopers.
In the early hours of Saturday, the Takfiri terrorists massacred dozens of people in Solhan, in the region near the borders of Mali and Niger.
On Sunday, local sources said they have recovered a total of 160 bodies from three mass graves.
“It's the local people themselves who have started exhuming the bodies and burying them after transporting them,” one local source said.
According to another local source, the situation in Solhan “is still volatile... despite the announcement of military operations.”
He added that residents were fleeing to the nearby towns of Sebba and Dori to save their lives.
“Many people lost everything after their homes and belongings were torched,” he further said.
Earlier, local sources had said that at least 132 people had been killed in the massacre, while a government toll stood at 132 dead and some 40 injured as of late Saturday.
This is considered as the deadliest attack recorded in Burkina Faso since the West African country was overrun by Takfiri terrorists linked to al-Qaida and Daesh groups about five years ago.
President Roch Marc Christian Kabore on Saturday strongly denounced the massacre in Solhan as “barbaric” and “despicable.”
“We must remain united and solid against these obscurantist forces,” Kabore said.
Separately on Sunday, the government declared three days of national mourning through Monday, confirming that “terrorists” had killed civilians of all ages and set fire to homes and the main market in Solhan.
