The article highlights the evolution of Yemeni tactics throughout the relentless year-long confrontation with some of the world's most advanced militaries. It also emphasizes the continual development of weapons used, ranging from electronic surveillance systems onboard ships to drones and missiles.
Rear Admiral Vassilios Gribaris of the Greek Navy confirmed that Yemenis have demonstrated their ability to adapt technology, enabling them to guide missiles toward targets using automatic identification systems (AIS) and other devices.
Joshua Hutchinson, managing director of intelligence and risk at Ambrey Maritime, added that Yemen's technological advancements allow precise engagement in the "final mile" against targets.
Hutchinson stressed that the use of such technology in ship attacks leaves the targeted vessels with minimal room for evasive actions. He also pointed out that the targets are specifically those operated by the U.S., U.K., Israel, or their affiliates, clearly indicating Yemen’s strategy.
The report further examines claims by the European maritime protection group “Auspice” about the success of disabling AIS to reduce ship strikes. However, Hutchinson refuted these claims, asserting that switching off AIS does not prevent targeting or attacks.
In the realm of information warfare, Yemen’s operations highlight its commitment to maintaining safe maritime environments for global navigation while executing precision strikes on adversaries.
The article cites examples of Yemen’s effective targeting. Recently, a senior executive of a Greek shipping company received an email warning that one of their vessels, docked at a port in occupied Palestine, was at risk of direct attack by Yemeni Armed Forces. This underscores Yemen’s reach and strategic precision.
Experts have dismissed claims that airstrikes by U.S. and coalition forces have significantly impacted Yemeni capabilities. Stavros Karampiridis, head of the Maritime Transport Research Group at Plymouth Business School, emphasized that comprehensive air campaigns fail to substantially affect Yemeni operations.
The National underscores the ongoing impact of Yemen's operations on adversaries. U.S., U.K., and Israeli-related ship operators continue rerouting their vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, adding at least 30% more travel time and approximately $1 million in additional fuel costs per diversion, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
Other consequences include skyrocketing insurance premiums. Louise Neville, CEO for Marine and Logistics Services at Marsh, noted that insurance premiums have reached up to 2% of a vessel's value for a single Red Sea crossing. Niels Haupt of Hapag-Lloyd confirmed that insurance rates remain prohibitively high, with costs ranging from 1% to 7% of a ship’s insured value per trip.
With insurers increasingly hesitant, Haupt said his company and competitors continue to avoid the Red Sea, doubting a resolution to the issue in the near term. Meanwhile, the commercial shipping industry benefits from higher transport fees and insurance premiums for targeted entities.
Data from Bank of America this month revealed that the situation in the Red Sea has more than doubled costs in 2024, despite a 10% net increase in the global fleet.
Joshua Hutchinson encapsulated the state of the Red Sea succinctly: "Explosions, missiles, and drama," noting that the intensity will persist until Gaza finds relief. Through its naval operations, Yemen reaffirms its enduring commitment to its allies and its capacity to reshape regional dynamics.
