Prisoners Affairs: Meetings with ICRC in Sana’a Focused on Exchange of Prisoners

News - Yemen: The head of the National Committee for Prisoners Affairs Abdulqader Al-Murtadha explained on Tuesday that the meetings that took place in Sana’a with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) focused on war prisoner exchange.

“We assured the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross of our full readiness to implement a comprehensive exchange deal,” Al-Murtadha said in a statement to Almasirah. “We discussed with him the obstacles that the aggression party is practicing for not completing the exchange.”

Al-Murtadha pointed out that several documents and details of the enforced disappearance of detainees and abductees were presented to the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

He stated that the President of the ICRC confirmed the refusal of the aggression party to allow the ICRC to visit prisons and see the conditions of the prisoners.

He indicated that the missing prisoners was one of the most prominent topics discussed with the President of the ICRC, stressing that the Committee had promised to work on moving this important problem.

Earlier on the day, the head of National Delegation Mohammed Abdulsalam met with the President of the ICRC and discussed with him means of progress in completing the prisoner exchange.

Abdulsalam affirmed the readiness of the Salvation Government to progress in this humanitarian issue and to complete a comprehensive exchange process. He called at the same time to reveal the fate of the missing prisoners and to give this aspect greater attention.

In June, the head of the National Committee for Prisoners Affairs Abdul Qadir Al-Murtada revealed new Saudi directives to aggression-mercenaries in which they ordered a stop to all locally agreed prisoner exchange.

Al-Murtada explained that the Saudis scolded mercenaries and ordered the suspension of seven prisoner exchanges on several fronts, including 400 prisoners from both sides.

Mercenaries working with the US-Saudi aggression had received strict Saudi directives to prevent local exchanges since March, and as a result the National Committee for Prisoners' Affairs was only able to carry out some individual exchanges.

Al-Murtada said that the forces of aggression put obstacles in the way of implementing the agreements that were sponsored by the United Nations. He added that the Saudi regime prevented all exchanges that take place through local mediation.

Foreign Minister Hisham Sharaf stressed the need to pressure the countries of US-Saudi aggression to respect international humanitarian law and international human rights law, to end aggression, siege and turn for peace.
