Saudi Anger Over Expected Rise in Fuel Prices

News - Middle East: Saudis were outraged by the expected rise in fuel prices in the kingdom, amid numerous calls for a gasoline boycott on Saturday.

Saudi Aramco is scheduled to announce the prices of gasoline and diesel on the tenth of this June, in conjunction with a wave of price hikes worldwide.

Aramco paved the way for a price hike in the coming period, saying in a statement that the local prices of fuel and energy products are subject to change in terms of rise or fall according to changes related to the process of exporting to the global market.

The Saudis’ anticipation of the wave of rising fuel prices turned into a “Twitter revolution” that included many calls for a boycott, through several hashtags, including “#boycott_gasoline_on_Saturday” and “#boycott them_chasten them.”

The boycott calls for refraining from buying fuel on Saturday as a means of putting pressure on the Saudi regime to back down from the expected hike in fuel prices.

The calls included organizing a boycott on Saturday every week, and not one day.

According to a statement by the OPEC Plus alliance, it was agreed to raise production to reach 648,000 barrels per day during July, or 7% of global demand.

This rate is similar to what will be produced during August, instead of the previously scheduled amount of 432,000 barrels per day.

The Saudis were surprised that the ruling regime had taken this step in order to reduce prices worldwide, while the authorities were moving towards increasing prices for their citizens.
