Most Registered Voters in US Say Trump Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Run Again: Poll

News - World: Most registered voters in the United States say Donald Trump should not be allowed to run for president a second time, citing the ongoing investigations into the former president, a new poll shows.

The poll, by Yahoo News/YouGov, showed that 51 percent of registered voters believe Trump should not “be allowed to serve as president again in the future” given “what we know” about the investigations.

Only 35 percent of the respondents said he should be able to run. Fourteen percent were unsure.

The poll was conducted on 1,566 registered voters across the United States between September 23 and 27. Its findings, subject to a sampling error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points, were released on Friday.

Several investigations are underway into the former president, including into whether he attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election that he lost. A congressional hearing into the January 6, 2021 riots on the US Capitol — and Trump’s role in inciting a mob of his supporters who temporarily blocked the confirmation of President Joe Biden’s victory — faces an end-of-the-year deadline to issue a final report.

A federal investigation is also underway seeking to find out whether Trump violated law when he took highly-classified documents to his residence after leaving the White House in January 2021. FBI agents raided his private house and club Mar-a-Lago, in Florida, in August, raising a torrent of speculation about the conduct of the former president and how his chances to run again in 2024 could be affected.

The Yahoo News/YouGov poll shows how those investigations — none of them still final — may already be negatively impacting voters’ perceptions.

According to the survey, fewer than half of Republican and Republican-leaning voters said they support Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, while 36 percent said they will back someone else.

But the poll also found that the 76-year-old Trump trails by only 2 percentage points if he does face off with President Biden two years from now. That margin was down from six in a previous Yahoo News-YouGov poll.

Biden himself is facing bleak prospects for a rerun, as many Democratic voters do not view the 79-year-old favorably, given both his record and age.
