Ignoring Saudi Leading Aggression Against Yemen, UN Envoy Praises End of ‘Conflict’

News - Yemen: The United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Joyce Msuya, and the head of the United Nations Mission in Support of the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA), Major General Michael Beary, on Monday, provided a regular briefing to the UN Security Council during a closed consultation session held on Monday.

The UN envoy to Yemen said in a press conference that Yemen had not witnessed such an opportunity during the past eight years to make progress in order to end the conflict, but he warned that "it is still possible for the course to shift unless the parties take bolder steps towards peace."

He stressed that Yemen is going through a “critical juncture” a year after all parties implemented a humanitarian and military truce under the auspices of the United Nations, indicating that the truce continues despite its expiration 6 months ago, according to him.

He pointed out that the implementation of many aspects of the truce is still continuing after the expiry of its period, noting that Yemen is witnessing the longest relative calm so far in this devastating war. Grundenberg points out that the agreement to run flights through Sana'a airport was obstructed by the coalition countries.

The UN envoy called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from provocative actions.

He stressed that he is in contact with all parties to determine the next steps towards a permanent ceasefire and reactivation of the political process under the auspices of the United Nations, in addition to taking measures to alleviate the economic and humanitarian situation.

He said that “any new agreement in Yemen must be a clear step towards a Yemeni-led political process,” ignoring that Yemen faced an international foreign aggression.

Prisoner Exchange

With regard to the Ramadan deal for the exchange of prisoners between the Sana'a forces and the US-Saudi forces, Grundberg praised the cooperation shown by all parties to implement the prisoner exchange process, according to which nearly 900 prisoners were released.

He stressed that this process, which was characterized by smooth success, “has renewed hope” for the release of the remaining prisoners.

"This has renewed the hopes of many Yemenis that their relatives could be released soon," he added.

Human crisis

For her part, Ghada Mudawi, Deputy Director of Operations and Advocacy at the United Nations (OCHA), said, “The continued easing of import restrictions has allowed more commercial goods to enter Yemen, on which Yemenis depend for survival, including 41 ships carrying 825,000 metric tons of commercial food, fuel and other commodities, double the quantities recorded in January.

The OCHA official pointed out that the positive developments came at the right time for the Yemeni people, as more than 21 million people need humanitarian assistance.

Regarding the fighting in the governorates of Marib and Shabwa in eastern Yemen, Mudawi said that this conflict has led to the displacement of nearly 10,000 people since early March.

Concluding her speech, Mudawi stressed the need for clear and urgent action on increasing funding, enabling unhindered humanitarian access, and facilitating investments to achieve economic stability, but added: “More than anything else, Yemenis need lasting peace. It is time for us to give it to them.”

Saudi Arabia, backed by the US and its other regional allies, launched a devastating war on Yemen in March 2015. The seven years and half of war has killed hundreds of thousands of people and destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure. Yemeni people are facing malnutrition, hunger, and famine, which have increased risks of disease and starvation.
