Washington Fuel War in Yemen And Then Was Absent from Peace Talks

News - Yemen:  The American website “Responsible Statecraft” stated that “Washington played a major role in the war on Yemen, and was an essential part in prolonging it, but it was, to a large extent, on the sidelines during the successful talks so far.”

  1. The website added, in a report, that “the US military intervention in Yemen, through 3 administrations, over the past eight years, has placed it firmly in the role of war makers,” but “despite the American influence, which occurred with the start of the war, it seems Yemen is ready for real peace.”

The website indicated that US President Joe Biden's envoy to Yemen, Tim Lenderking, traveled in March to Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman, while Biden's national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, spoke to the "architect of war", Mohammed bin Salman, and "welcomed the extraordinary efforts of Saudi Arabia." For a roadmap to ending the war.

While these efforts seem to indicate "Washington's interest in getting itself involved in the negotiations," they also remind "who the United States has been on the side of over the past eight years," according to Responsible Statecraft.

The website stated that the recent Pentagon leaks regarding the Saudis’ approval of the Sana’a government’s demands “reveal Riyadh’s desperation to get out of a war it could not win, and reveal the increasingly ineffective and counterproductive role of the Biden administration in many ways in this process.”

The website talked about the history of the US intervention in Yemen, saying that former President Barack Obama "hastened, from the first moments of the conflict, to announce his administration's support for the Saudi allies."

In the years since then, Presidents Obama and Donald Trump have sold a total of “at least $54.6 billion in military support to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, from 2015 through 2021,” according to the US Government Accountability Office.

And while President Biden claimed to end support for the war in early 2021, the Government Accountability Office report found that the distinction between "offensive" and "defensive" operations was never defined by state officials, and the current US administration has continued to support the coalition.

Military support for the war went beyond arms sales, as the United States provided logistical support over the years of the war, choosing targets from the command room, exchanging intelligence information, providing aircraft with air refueling, training pilots and ground forces, and providing spare parts, equipment and aircraft. , providing diplomatic cover for the war and the blockade, and even the secret deployment of US special forces at the Saudi-Yemeni border.

The website added, "This was tantamount to an illegal and unconstitutional war, implicated the United States as a party to the war, and prompted Congress to pass its first resolution on war powers in April 2019."

In its report, the website touched on the criteria for lasting peace in Yemen, stressing that the road map must include “restoring Yemen’s sovereignty by lifting the blockade completely, ending the UAE’s occupation of areas such as Socotra Island and Saudi Arabia’s occupation of Al-Mahrah governorate.”

"This exit could pave the way for peace between Yemenis, who have a vested interest in coexistence, and are able to reach a negotiated settlement," the website noted.
