Discontented Israeli Youth Carp About Lack of Future Prospects, Mull Immigration: Study

News - Middle East: An Israeli research institute has revealed the depth of social crises among settlers in the occupied territories, saying a large number of discontented Israeli youth complain about the lack of future prospects and think of ways to immigrate in pursuit of economic well-being.

The ERI institute said in a report cited by the Palestinian Shehab news agency that there is a “crisis of confidence” among the Israeli youth of the age group between 18 and 34 years.

According to the report, 42% of the youth pointed to their bad luck and lack of future prospects to achieve their ambitions, while 62% complained that they had to face future risks on their own. Fifty-two percent of them indicated there is racism on ethnic and regional grounds in Israel.

With regard to immigration and the preference to live abroad, the data indicated that 47% are looking for economic well-being, 45% dream of establishing a home and 40% are looking for economic security.

Israel has been the scene of weeks-long anti-regime protests. The major grievance is the radical policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet.

Tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets across the occupied territories for the 28th straight week on Saturday against Netanyahu’s highly unpopular scheme to overhaul the judicial system. The protesters also demonstrated outside the residence of President Isaac Herzog in the city of al-Quds.

Critics say Netanyahu, who is on trial on several counts of corruption charges, is trying to use the scheme to quash possible judgments against him.

Protesters have vowed to keep the monumental demonstrations until the cabinet decides against pushing through with the overhaul plan.
