What Are the Reasons for Starving War against the people of Yemen?

Yemen: There is no government that seeks to prove its failure, as is happening with the pro-Saudi aggression government in Yemen. Under a situation full of corruption, the Yemenis live in the US, Saudi-controlled areas in southern and eastern Yemen. The pro-aggression government has abandoned any responsibility towards the people and is cling to corruption to manage the interests of the some forces.

According to observers, it does not seem that there are any hopes that can be bet on to improve the situation, as the pro-aggression government deal with corruption as an acquired right, while many observers believe that corruption is one of the aspects of the starving war aiming at bringing the people of Yemen to their knees.

In August 2018, the report of the Committee of Regional and International Experts to Investigate Human Rights Violations indicated that corruption by the internationally recognized government in Yemen threatens to undermine peace efforts in Yemen. However, the UN and the international community did not show any interest in the warnings of the team of experts that had been suspended by Human Rights Council.

Despite the daily demonstrations of the people of the occupied Yemeni regions, in rejection of the starvation policy, these demonstrations did not convince the pro-aggression government to take any step towards limiting the increasing economic deterioration and the exacerbation of poverty in those areas.

The disaster for the Yemenis lies in the politicization of human rights issues, as there is no one among the human rights and humanitarian organizations who thinks about holding accountable those responsible for the war of starvation to which the people are exposed.

Many observers believe that the support provided by donors to defend human rights deliberately goes to marginal issues and ignores the crimes that the country suffers from.

Many Yemenis believe that there is an equation that some international powers led by the US are trying to impose on Yemen, which is to impose a war of corruption and starvation on the Yemenis in exchange for obtaining concessions that guarantee the illegitimate interests of the US-Saudi aggression in Yemen.

Back in March, UNICEF announced that more than 400,000 children are at risk of starvation in Yemen, with nearly 2.2 million in need of urgent care.

New figures indicate that hunger among children has reached an “all-time high”, with at least 462,000 suffering from severe acute malnutrition – a drastic increase of about 200 percent since 2014.

In a report published, UNICEF said at least one child dies every 10 minutes because of malnutrition, diarrhea and respiratory-tract infections.

Children bear the brunt of Yemen’s ongoing war
“The state of health of children in the Middle East’s poorest country has never been as catastrophic as it is today,” Meritxell Relano, the agency’s acting representative, said in a statement.

“Malnutrition in Yemen is at an all-time high and increasing.”

Severe acute malnutrition is a major cause of death for children under the age of five, and is apparent when a child has a very low weight for their height and becomes visibly frail and skeletal.

Sa'adah governorate, the most heavily bombed region in Yemen by the US-Saudi aggression, has the world’s highest stunting rates among children, affecting eight out of 10 in some areas, it said.

Stunting – where a child is short for their age – is another sign of chronic malnourishment and has irreversible consequences for both physical health and cognitive function.

Other governorates – Hodeidah, Taiz, Hajjah and Lahej – were also badly affected after 20 months of war, UNICEF said.

The US-Saudi aggression has also taken a devastating toll on Yemen’s health system which is on the verge of collapse, UNICEF says in the report.

Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with its Arab allies and with arms and logistics support from the US and other Western states, launched the devastating war on Yemen in March 2015.

Several medical facilities have been damaged or destroyed, with the US-Saudi raids on medical centers, schools, mosques, factories and homes.

The aggression has also imposed a sea and air blockade on Yemen.
