Rescue Workers in Libya Retrieve Bodies After Catastrophic Floods

News - World: More than 5,300 bodies have been counted in the Libyan city of Derna and the toll is expected to increase significantly and may even double, a minister in the regional administration said on Wednesday, after the city was hit by catastrophic floods.

The floods were caused by a huge Mediterranean storm that burst dams, swept away buildings and wiped out as much as a quarter of the eastern coastal city.

Video footage showed Libyan Red Crescent volunteers carrying bodies from rubble piles, through bushes, and across streams.

Photographs showed the devastating aftermath in Derna, with buildings reduced to rubble, and volunteers trying to push trucks that got stuck in the mud.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya said on Wednesday in a tweet that at least 30,000 individuals were displaced in Derna.
