Veteran diplomat Zhai Jun, who is currently on a tour of the region, said on Monday the situation in Gaza is “very serious” and “worrisome.”
Zhai said China is willing to do “whatever is conducive” to promote dialogue, achieve ceasefire and restore peace.
Last week, Zhai pinned the cause of the conflict on the lack of guarantees for the rights of Palestinians. Zhai is currently visiting the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and other countries in the region to strengthen coordination aimed at ending the crisis.
At the Cairo meeting, Zhai called for an “immediate ceasefire and an end to the fighting as quickly as possible.”
On October 15, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Israel must “listen earnestly to the calls of the international community and the UN secretary general, and cease its collective punishment of the people of Gaza.”
Israel waged the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance groups launched Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, a surprise attack into the occupied territories in response to the Israeli regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the Israeli onslaught on Gaza has so far killed over 5,087 Palestinians.
Lebanon’s resistance movement Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging sporadic fire since October 8, a day after the regime started bringing the Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip under a relentless war.
Hezbollah recently announced striking a number of Israeli military bases on the border with Palestine.
