Humanitarian Affairs Council: Politicizing Humanitarian Aid Contravenes Intl. Conventions, Treaties

News - Yemen: Assistant Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for the Management and Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohammed Fares, emphasized on Monday that politicizing humanitarian aid undermines its essence and goes against established international conventions, laws, and treaties.

Fares, in a statement to Al Masirah Network, pointed out the contradiction in halting food assistance in Sana'a and free areas while continuing its distribution in the occupied regions, which directly conflicts with the fundamental principles of humanitarian work.

Highlighting the political underpinnings of the World Food Program's decision to cease humanitarian aid in the free provinces, Fares noted that this action was prompted by prior American threats to terminate aid if Yemen's support for the Palestinian cause persisted.

He stressed that the program has secured the necessary resources to maintain aid distribution at last year's 2022 level, refuting any claims made by the WFP suggesting a decrease in funding. He further clarified that this year's funding exceeds the previous year's amount, as detailed on the WFP's official website.

On Sunday, the Supreme Council for the Management and Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and International Cooperation condemned the WFP's decision to halt humanitarian aid in the free provinces, viewing it as a politically motivated measure and a punitive action against Yemeni supporters of the Palestinian cause.

Despite significant efforts to collaborate with the WFP in finding solutions to continue aiding the most vulnerable, these efforts were rejected, leaving the Council to hold the WFP accountable for the dire humanitarian consequences faced by millions due to this unjust decision against the Yemeni populace.

Last week, the WFP said last week it had paused general food distribution in north Yemen due to "limited funding and disagreement with local authorities over how to focus on the poorest there."

During a speech commemorating Martyr's Day in mid-November, the Leader of the Revolution, Sayyed Abdulmalik, disclosed that the United States has employed pressure tactics on Yemen due to its support for the Palestinian resistance. These tactics include direct threats and revival of war threats within the US-Saudi coalition, hindering agreements and impeding humanitarian aid efforts.
