PM: Yemen Prefer Direct Confrontation with US Rather Than Dealing with Intermediaries

News - Yemen: Yemen's Caretaker Prime Minister Abdulaziz bin Habtoor stated on Saturday that the United States will either fail to pass resolutions in the Security Council or undermine their fundamental value.

Bin Habtoor's remarks came as a response to the US vetoing a Russian amendment to a draft resolution in the Security Council on Friday. The amendment aimed to cease Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip.

Bin Habtoor underscored the necessity for a new global governance system that exceeds the frameworks established post-World War II.

He pointed out that the US has shifted focus from deliberating on the fairness of Yemen's stance regarding Gaza to analyzing its financial implications. He further expressed a preference for direct confrontation with the US instead of engaging through intermediaries.

Bin Habtoor commended the Malaysian government for preventing Zionism from entering its ports, noting that it demonstrated a stronger stance than some Arab countries that participated in the aggression against Gaza alongside Israel.

He also drew attention to the correlation between the World Food Program's decision to withhold aid from beneficiaries and Yemen's political and military support for Gaza. Bin Habtoor urged a reconsideration of this decision, emphasizing the importance of avoiding the politicization of aid aligned with inhumane American agendas.

In this regard, Talaat Al-Sharjabi, spokesperson for the Supreme Council for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, highlighted the pivotal moment faced by the World Food Program to determine whether it operates as an international program adhering to UN policies or merely serves as an instrument of American political objectives.

Al-Sharjabi clarified that the reduction in aid selectively targeted the northern governorates without an overall funding decrease for the program.

He emphasized that these punitive measures by the World Food Program directly undermine its objectives and reveal the extent of American influence over international organizations.

The UN Security Council (UNSC) has adopted a resolution urging more aid for the Gaza Strip, but falling short of a call for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palastinian resistance.

The vote followed days of negotiations to avoid a veto by the US, a permanent UNSC member and a key ally of Israel.

UN chief António Guterres said the "real problem" to delivering aid was Israel's ongoing offensive.

The UN has warned Gaza is at risk of famine if the war continues.

More than 20,000  people have been killed in Gaza since the regime launched its attacks on October 7, the day when the Palestinian resistance group Hamas carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the Israelis.

Minutes before the vote, Russia - one of the five permanent members of the council - introduced an amendment to revert to an earlier draft calling for an immediate ceasefire. It argued the text gave Israel freedom of movement to further clear the Gaza Strip.

The Russian amendment was defeated and both Russia and the US went on to abstain, while the other 13 members of the council backed the text that now calls for creating conditions "for a sustainable cessation of hostilities".
