News - Middle East: Amnesty International has renewed its call for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to release activist Ahmed Mansoor, who is currently imprisoned in Abu Dhabi on charges of "insulting state symbols." Mansoor is facing trial for the second time and is at risk of receiving a death or life sentence as the UAE authorities seek to extend his previous sentence of 10 years in prison.

The organization called on people from all around the world to participate in its major letter-writing campaign, emphasizing that sending a message may seem like a small gesture, but collective action has the power to change lives. 

According to Amnesty International, the campaign, which is now in its second month, will witness individuals worldwide sending millions of cards, emails, social media posts, and publications in solidarity with individuals whose fundamental rights are threatened or denied, urging those in power to put an end to these violations.

In recent weeks, approximately 90 individuals, including Ahmed Mansoor, have been referred to mass trials (87 in the UAE) on terrorism charges by state security authorities, coinciding with the COP28 Climate Summit held in Dubai.
