Kremlin Condemns US-UK Aggression Against Yemen

News - Yemen: Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian presidency (Kremlin), declared that the US-UK aggression strikes on Yemen are illegal according to international law.

As reported by TASS, Peskov informed reporters that when questioned about these strikes, "We denounce these strikes from the perspective of international law; these strikes are illegal."

Peskov highlighted that Moscow refrained from voting for the American draft resolution condemning the attacks on Yemen in the Red Sea. He emphasized that the countries involved in the aggression against Yemen attempted to establish an international legal basis for their actions, but this attempt failed, as the adopted resolution does not provide any right to strike.

For its part, the Russian Foreign Ministry considered the American-British venture of launching strikes on Yemen as a direct threat to peace and security. It called for preventing the escalation of the situation in the region after the American attack on Yemen.

In the early hours of January 12, the US and the UK military utilized surface ships, warplanes, and submarines to conduct air strikes on Sana’a and several Yemeni cities.

On Friday, Russia called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council following reports of extensive airstrikes conducted by the United States and the United Kingdom in Yemen. The purpose of the meeting was to address the concerns raised by the airstrikes and their impact on the situation in Yemen. The request indicates Russia's intention to discuss the matter and seek clarity on the actions taken by the US and UK governments in Yemen.

On Wednesday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution demanding an immediate end to attacks on Israel-bound ships in the Red Sea. Eleven UNSC members voted for the document, while four countries, namely Russia, China, Algeria, and Mozambique, abstained. Earlier, the UNSC rejected three Russian proposals to amend the text of the draft resolution, including one that mentioned the conflict between Palestine and Israel as the reason behind the recent escalation in the Red Sea.

Following the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip, Yemen vowed to launch strikes on Israeli territory and prohibit ships associated with Israel from passing through the waters of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until the operation in the Palestinian enclave ceased.

According to CENTCOM, over 20 commercial carriers and ships, involved with Israel, have been attacked in these waters since mid-November. In response, the US government declared the launch of Operation "Prosperity Guardian" to ensure the safety of Israeli ships in the Red Sea.
