In a statement issued on Monday, the union called on all employees and workers in Aden and other occupied southern and eastern provinces to participate in a gradual strike, raising red flags starting from Tuesday, ultimately leading to a general strike. This is in response to the pro-aggression government's failure to meet legitimate demands, including the timely payment of salaries at the end of each month, disbursement of annual bonuses, and urgent settlements as agreed upon, considering the unprecedented economic and living collapse in areas controlled by the aggression alliance.
The Federation stressed the necessity for the pro-aggression government to restructure salaries to align with the current living conditions and the catastrophic depreciation of the national currency against other currencies. Additionally, it called for the reactivation of the Aden refinery, the revival of port operations, the cancellation of the increase in customs tariffs, and the provision and improvement of basic services such as electricity, water, healthcare, and education.
The statement placed responsibility for the suffering of employees in Aden and the occupied southern provinces on the aggression alliance, the occupation, the pro-aggression government, and the so-called Transitional Council. It urged all workers to unite in preparation for the upcoming escalation phase.
Earlier in the day, exchange companies and centers in the occupied city of Aden announced the suspension of their operations due to the catastrophic collapse of the currency circulating in the occupied provinces after the exchange rate of one dollar exceeded 1600 Yemeni riyals. This has hurt the prices of food and medicine.
Sources attribute the surge in foreign currency prices to the failure of the Saudi-backed government to implement necessary economic measures to stabilize the local currency's value. This failure is linked to the printing of nearly 6 trillion Yemeni rials without adequate cash cover in recent years.
The economic collapse has severely impacted the living conditions of citizens in Aden and other southern provinces, reaching a point where the government is unable to fulfill its obligation to pay teachers' salaries for the last month in Aden. This dire situation highlights the urgent need for comprehensive economic reforms and intervention to address the currency crisis and mitigate its repercussions on the population.
