Report Exposes Dire Plight of Yemeni Fishermen Amidst Foreign Naval Escalation in Red Sea

Yemen: A report published by the London-based newspaper "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" has revealed the dire situation faced by Yemeni fishermen due to the American and British escalation in the Red Sea.

The report pointed out that the militarization of the Red Sea has exacerbated the suffering of Yemeni fishermen, with the increasing presence of foreign naval vessels posing a threat to them and destroying one of the country's most important economic resources.

The report detailed the plight of thousands of Yemeni fishermen in the provinces of Al-Mahra and Hadhramaut, which are under Saudi and Emirati occupation, due to an environmental disaster impacting the coasts of these provinces, posing a real threat to their sole source of livelihood.

According to the report, a large segment of Yemeni fishermen are experiencing an unprecedented and sharp decline in production, as fishing represents the livelihood for thousands of people in these provinces. The report noted a significant reduction in fish numbers and their disappearance along the coasts of Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra, turning this decline into the biggest challenge currently facing the fishermen, along with rising fuel costs and economic and living crises, making the fishing profession extremely arduous.

The report stated that more than 20 types of fish have disappeared from the Yemeni coasts overlooking the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden, including species such as dirak, bayad, sharuri, ghalous, and ghurayd, which has led to an increase in prices for the available fish, such as hamour, jash, and bagha, which were previously abundant and close to the shores.

The report attributed the deterioration to large foreign ships plundering Yemeni waters in the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea with the collusion of the coalition of aggression and the government of mercenaries, in addition to their massive fish trawling operations, causing widespread destruction in fishing areas, amidst the absence of Yemeni sovereignty over the southern and eastern provinces and territorial waters.

In 2015, Saudi and Emirati forces entered the city of Aden from Bir Ali, citing the need to repel the "Houthi-Iranian" intervention and "secure international navigation". It didn't take long after the arrival of these forces for the new British-style experiment to take shape.

This comes amid escalating anger and popular discontent among citizens in the occupied southern and eastern provinces due to the collapse of the electricity system in many of these provinces. The pro-aggression government has failed to provide the necessary fuel to operate power plants and save citizens from the intense summer heat.

The Saudi-Emirati ambition in Yemen faced a southern awakening, which began on the island of Socotra when thousands protested against turning the island into a dependency of Abu Dhabi. Then came the uprising of the people of Al-Mahra in July, demanding sovereignty over the province and rejecting foreign control over the city. The protests expanded to reach the city of Aden, where the UAE has deployed over thirty thousand local military personnel loyal to them.

Hundreds took to the streets demanding the departure of the "coalition" forces from the south, a situation that analysts have compared to the protests in the 1960s against British presence, which laid the foundation for armed struggle in the south.
