Iran Leads Joint Statement to Recognize Zionism as Racism

News - Middle East: Iran has taken the lead in issuing a joint statement representing multiple nations, urging the recognition of Zionism as a form of racism.

It cited the Israeli regime’s extensive and systematic violation of the rights of the oppressed Palestinians.

Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Ali Bahraini read out the statement at the 56th Regular Session of UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday.

Representing several Islamic and independent nations, the Iranian diplomat spoke at the session, where the UN special rapporteur on racism was present.

Bahraini advocated the reinstatement of UN Resolution 3379, which historically identified Zionism as a manifestation of racism.

In the joint statement, reference was also made to the 2017 report of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), which identifies Israel as an “apartheid regime.”

It also underscored that the prohibition of racial discrimination and apartheid is a fundamental principle in international law.
