Putin Tells Mahmoud Abbas Russia ‘Doing Everything to Support Palestine’

News - World: President Vladimir Putin of Russia has expressed great pain and concern about civilian losses in the Gaza Strip as he received Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the situation in West Asia in light of Israel’s hostilities against the Palestinian people.

Putin received Abbas in the Kremlin on Tuesday, where the two leaders exchanged views “on the situation in the Middle East in light of the current aggravation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip," the Kremlin said in a post on the Telegram messaging app.

Putin told the Palestinian leader that Moscow is “doing everything ... to support Palestine and the Palestinian people.”

The only way to create "long-lasting, reliable, stable peace in the region," Putin said, is implementation of all UN resolutions and the "creation of a fully-fledged Palestinian state.”

Abbas, for his part, praised Moscow’s efforts to achieve Palestinian reconciliation and called Russia “one of the dearest friends of the Palestinian people.”

The Russian leader has always been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian people and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Abbas said he traveled to Moscow “to exchange views [with Putin] regarding the difficult conditions that Palestine is experiencing, and to discuss ways to stop the aggression and war of extermination waged by the occupation in Gaza and the West Bank,” according to the official Palestinian WAFA news agency.

The Palestinian leader also called for an immediate cease-fire and the full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, to pave the way for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with east al-Quds as its capital.

Abbas will be in Moscow until Wednesday and is to travel to Turkey for talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan afterwards.

Since Israel waged its campaign of death and destruction in Gaza in October 2023, Moscow has hosted Palestinian factions on several occasions as part of its efforts to achieve internal Palestinian reconciliation and secure a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

The regime’s military campaign in Gaza has so far claimed the lives of nearly 40000 people, according to latest figured released by the Gaza Health Ministry.
