The confessions expose the truth about the Islah Party, its role in leading the youth revolution, and the American reliance on Islah leaders during and after the revolution as a means to destroy Yemeni society and divide Yemen through the Gulf initiatives, which aimed to tear Yemen apart under American cover. The confessions from the spies, who were Washington's main arms within Yemeni society, revealed the true nature of the Islah Party.
Hidden Support: America at the Center of Decision-Making
The confessions of spy Shaif al-Hamdani highlight the U.S. targeting of the youth revolution. He states in his confessions: "When the youth revolution began in 2011, there was a hidden role for the U.S. Embassy, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Democracy and Governance sector. Some prominent leaders within the youth components were covertly supported to create smart individuals who could play a future role in reaching decision-making centers that would allow the U.S. to control decisions."
He added: "Among those leaders who received support were Tawakkol Karman, who participated in the International Visitor Program through USAID and the U.S. Cultural Attaché, as well as Hossam al-Sharjabi, Afrah al-Zouba, and Osama al-Raini, who played a prominent role among the youth."
Al-Hamdani confirmed that the U.S. Embassy encouraged these leaders and other figures to control the revolution at the time to keep Yemen's political, economic, and social situation under their control, focusing on the youth component as they represent the largest segment of society.
He explained that many of the figures who rose to prominent positions in the National Dialogue, such as Osama al-Raini, Afrah al-Zouba, Hossam al-Sharjabi, and others who reached government positions enabling them to make decisions, like Jalal Ya'qub, who also became a Deputy Minister of Finance, achieved this thanks to American moves through the embassy.
In the same context, according to spy Shaif al-Hamdani, the U.S. intervention and covert support came after the U.S. noticed that the revolution in Yemen was taking a different direction. They worked to preserve their interests through the Islah Party, instructing Ali Mohsen to announce his defection from the armed forces and join the youth revolution. Other figures from the Islah Party, such as Hamid al-Ahmar and others, were directed to provide support and control the youth revolution at the time for political purposes that served U.S. interests.
Close Surveillance: The Squares Under U.S. Scrutiny
Spy Abdul Mueen Azzan revealed in his confessions the role assigned to him during the popular protests. He explained that his role was intelligence-related in 2011 during the protests in the squares, which involved communicating with civil society organizations, both those present and prominent in the square through their representatives, and keeping informed about what was happening in the square.
Azzan stated in his confessions: "I communicated with these organizations to gather information about the square, any specific movements, the youth's inclinations in the square, and the different blocs within the square, through civil society organizations that were partners with MEPI (Middle East Partnership Initiative) and were actively present."
He added, "Some of the organizations partnered with MEPI even conducted activities within tents in the square. I remember attending an event and visiting the square once or twice, where I met with representatives of the organizations that were receiving support and grants from MEPI. These organizations were present in the square and had relations and communications with various entities, youth, and different youth blocs within the square. All the information I received was, of course, documented in reports and sent to Joan Cummins."
Spy Mohammed al-Kharashi stated: "During the sit-in squares in 2011, groups of spies were sent to monitor the squares, identify the prominent figures joining daily, and report on the major events happening daily in the square, with these reports immediately sent to the Regional Security Officer."
U.S. Interventions and the Division of Yemen
Regarding the U.S. role in creating conflicts and divisions within Yemeni society, spy Abdul Qader al-Saqqaf stated in his confessions: "During my work at that time in the U.S. Embassy in the Political Section, it was clear that U.S. interventions led to the destabilization of Yemeni society and the creation of internal conflicts until 2011, which saw the division of society and the splitting of parties, including the ruling General People's Congress, which paved the way for foreign and American interventions."
He added: "Among the foreign interventions was the idea of the 'Gulf Initiative,' adopted by Saudi Arabia with the assistance of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and other supporting countries. These countries became known as the ten sponsoring countries, and the chaos grew.
He explained that this initiative and the external interventions, along with the interventions of the UN envoy sent by America, aimed to save the National Dialogue, which ultimately served American interests. This is what America itself was seeking regarding the implementation of the federal regions project in Yemen, which is part of the American plan that Washington and Riyadh are trying to implement in Yemen."
Months ago, Yemeni Security Forces announced they dismantled a significant espionage network working for the United States and Israel, involved in espionage and sabotage activities across various state institutions for decades.
According to a statement from the Security Forces, the network was directly linked to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and obtained susceptible information about various aspects of life in Yemen, including military, security, economic, agricultural, health, and educational fields.
