News - Middle East: The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has announced the martyrdom of its leader in Lebanon during an Israeli airstrike against the southern part of the country.

Fateh al-Sharif, "a member of the movement's leadership abroad," was assassinated during the attack that targeted the al-Bass refugee camp in the city of Tyre on Monday, the group announced

The atrocity also claimed the lives of his wife, son, and daughter, it added.

Sharif also used to serve as the president of the Teachers' Union of UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees.

Hamas hailed him for his track record "in the education sector" and praised him as "a brilliant teacher."

Sharif’s assassination came as part of the Israeli regime’s October-present military escalation against Lebanon, which took a significantly deadlier turn earlier this month.

On Friday, the regime launched intense airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Lebanon’s capital Beirut, assassinating Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, secretary general of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, besides causing hundreds of other casualties.

Various resistance groups and regional officials have warned that the regime was seeking to turn Lebanon into another Gaza, where it has killed more than 41,500 Palestinians, mostly women and children, since October 7.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres recently insisted, however, that “the world cannot afford” such an unwelcome prospect.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Sunday accused Israel of conducting “criminal operations daily” across the country.
