According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), those executed by Saudi authorities this year include 20 Yemenis, 21 Pakistanis, 14 Syrians, 10 Nigerians, 9 Egyptians, 8 Jordanians, 7 Ethiopians, 3 Sudanese, 3 Indians, 3 Afghans, and one each from Sri Lanka, Eritrea, and the Philippines. This figure is nearly three times higher than the execution numbers from 2023 and 2022, reflecting an escalation in government repression within the Kingdom.
In related developments, Saudi human rights advocates and lawyers accused Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of overseeing a crackdown on freedom of expression since he came to power. This includes the introduction of a so-called "anti-terrorism" law, widely criticized by Human Rights Watch for its broad definition of terrorism.
