Minister of Transport Demands Daily Flights from Sana’a International Airport

News - Yemen: The Minister of Transport demanded the United Nations to approve daily civil commercial flights from Sana’a International Airport without restrictions or conditions as a right guaranteed by international laws and humanitarian covenants.

The Minister Abdul-Wahhab Al-Durra said Thursday, "Sana'a Airport has proven its technical and professional readiness by receiving civilian commercial flights with efficiency and competence in accordance with international standards in force at global airports and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)."

Minister Al-Durra added: "It has become important to operate daily flights from Sana'a International Airport in light of the inability of the current flights to meet the needs of patients and travelers."

He said, "Only one trip was carried out for the Cairo-Sana'a line, and six trips to Jordan during the past period of the UN-sponsored truce, which calls for adopting daily flights starting next Saturday so that patients can travel for treatment after being stranded for more than six years."

Earlier, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, announced that an agreement had been reached to extend the military humanitarian truce for more two months.

The renewed truce will go into effect on June 2, at 7 pm Yemen time," a press statement from the office of the UN envoy said.

Grundberg pledged to work to implement and support the truce in full, and to move towards a sustainable political solution that meets the aspirations and demands of the Yemenis, noting that the truce was extended according to the provisions of the original agreement of April 2.

In early April, the UN special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, announced the nationwide ceasefire, for the first time since 2016, saying the two-month truce would be eligible for renewal with the consent of parties. The truce meant to halt all military operations in the country and to bring the foreign military invasion to an end.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the truce "must be a first step to ending Yemen’s devastating war," urging the warring parties to build on the opportunity to "resume an inclusive and comprehensive Yemeni political process."

The deal stipulates halting offensive military operations, including cross-border attacks, and allowing fuel-laden ships to enter Yemen’s lifeline al-Hudaydah port and commercial flights in and out of the airport in the capital Sana’a "to predetermined destinations in the region."

The Saudi-led aggression continues to violate the truce by detaining new fuel ships, despite their inspection and obtaining permits from the United Nations, insisting on the closure of Sana’a Airport, as well as, the fires of the aggression side did not subside along the fronts, on the borders and inside. Shelling, reconnaissance, development and crawl, including a failed advance carried out by mercenaries towards Army and Popular Committee sites south of Marib.
