Former US official Claims Absence of US Influential Role in Aggression Against Yemen

Yemen: The former US deputy ambassador to Yemen, Nabil Khoury claimed that the role of the United States in Yemen is characterized by the lack of a clear vision and the absence of an influential role.

Khoury’s statements about the “absence of the American role” in his interview with Al-Mahria TV contradicted press reports that indicated that representatives of the US House of Representatives are leading the latest attempt to end American complicity in the war on Yemen and demand the Biden administration to stop US arms exports to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The American newspaper “The Recorder” reported on June 5 that “The United States should support the peace process in Yemen instead of fueling the war, as the United States currently has an opportunity to alleviate the tragic conditions in Yemen, and that it must bear full responsibility for that".

Meanwhile, the United States, through the US National Security Adviser and Washington's envoy to Yemen, took a negative stance on the settlement talks that were taking place between Sana'a and Riyadh. This led to the obstruction of negotiations to end the war, and prompted Saudi Arabia to disavow the understandings reached between Riyadh and Sana’a through an Omani mediation, contrary to the claims of the US diplomat, Nabil Khoury.

Although Khoury considered that there are tendencies to divide Yemen, and that this division will not lead to stability, the issue of instability, from the point of view of observers, naturally represents the goal of the United States in the war on Yemen.

Earlier, Lieutenant General Al-Ruwaishan said that "there is no Saudi response until the moment to resolve the humanitarian situation after the Ramadan negotiations," pointing out that estimates indicate that they are trying to gain time,

The Deputy Prime Minister for Defense and Security Affairs Jalal Al-Ruwaishan added that

The ongoing negotiations with the Saudi side, mediated by Oman, in their current situation, remain attempts to achieve peace, which were met positively by Sana’a.

Saudi Arabia, backed by the US and its other regional allies, launched a devastating war on Yemen in March 2015. The eight years of war has killed hundreds of thousands of people and destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure. People of Yemen  are facing malnutrition, hunger, and famine, which have increased risks of disease and starvation.

The warring sides agreed on a UN-mediated ceasefire last April but it broke down after six months. Nevertheless, tensions have eased and casualties have decreased as some elements of the truce still remain in place.

Days ago, Mohammad Abdulsalam, said that a year has passed since the UN-sponsored truce was announced, there has been sufficient time to show that US-Saudi aggression is not serious about peace.

"Instead of peace, unfortunately, US-Saudi aggression kept on war and blockade. It refused to pay salaries, and take other necessary steps to bring peace," he said.

It should be noted that Sana'a affirms that lifting the ban on Sana'a airport, allowing the flow of food and commercial goods to the port of Hodeidah without any obstacles, with dispersing salaries of all employees from the country's revenues, is a priority to break the status quo.

In the same regard, the leader of Ansarullah, Sayyed Abdulmalik also said, "The US seeks to obstruct the Omani efforts by keeping the coalition of aggression away from any possible agreement or understanding, and this is totally unacceptable," adding that "the humanitarian file is a top priority in the negotiations."

He pointed out that "the US coalition cannot evade any obligations or agreements because it is the side aggressing Yemen."
