UAE-Saudi-Backed Government Tortures People of Aden in Summer Heat by Corruption

Yemen:   The issue of the electricity cut is one of the most prominent manifestations of the economic collapse in the Yemeni areas under the control of the US-Saudi aggression.

During the past few days, the conflict between the leaders and activists of the UAE-backed Transitional Council and the Saudi-backed government revealed suspicious gaps, indicating the existence of massive corruption in the electricity issue.

The governor of Aden, Ahmed Lamlas, announced that the revenues of the governorate of Aden would not be transferred to the Central Bank, due to “the government's failure to carry out its duties and deliberately punish the people of Aden” by failing to meet the city's electricity needs.

While the “government” said in a statement issued last Sunday in response to the accusations of the Transitional Council, that “the daily expenditure for generating electricity in its current situation in the city for eight hours is approximately $1.8 million, $1.2 million of it is the value of oil derivatives and diesel.

The government statement, published by the Saba News Agency, admitted that the dilemma problems in the pro-coalition “government” itself, stressing that “the stability of electricity services requires huge investments and political stability. The frequent disturbances complicate opportunities to attract the necessary investments and financing, which caused the crisis in the interim capital, Aden, and the rest of the occupied governorates.

The government statement added that “the government’s spending on electricity in Aden represents approximately 60 percent of its spending on the sector in general in all governorates,” and that “Aden electricity alone drains the largest share of guaranteed oil derivatives”.

The temperature rises to more than 40 degrees Celsius in the city of Aden, making life almost impossible without electricity in the city located on the coast of the Arabian Sea.

Despite the daily protests, which demand the provision of electricity services in Aden and the rest of the Yemeni regions under the control of the coalition, the government has not been able to provide solutions through which it can contribute to resolving the electricity crisis, albeit gradually.

Researcher in the oil economy, Muhammad Salem Mujawar, said, “The volume of the government’s annual spending on electricity exceeds $1 billion, but the operating rate does not exceed 40% of the actual need for electricity.

Activists believe that the “government” uses astronomical numbers regarding the operation of electricity, and that if it is actually proven that the government spends nearly a billion dollars annually, then an immediate investigation is required.
