Political Council Member Offers Condolences to Families of Earthquake Victims in Morocco

News - World: Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, Member of Yemen's Supreme Political Council, sent on Saturday a message of condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims of the earthquake in various regions in Morocco.

"With great sadness, we extend our condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims in our brotherly Morocco during this difficult time they are facing due to the earthquake that struck their country," he said.

"There is no doubt that Yemeni People are saddened by the loss of Moroccan brothers' lives and the immense destruction that has affected homes and properties due to the earthquake, while they have been living in sorrow for eight years due to the US-Saudi aggression, whose losses exceed what a series of earthquakes can do together," he added.

Al-Houthi expressed his feelings of pain regarding this tragic incident, affirming standing by the Moroccan people in the face of it.

A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake has struck Morocco, killing at least 2,012 people and injuring more than 2,000.

The quake struck at 44 miles (71 kilometers) southwest of Marrakesh at a depth of 18.5 kilometers at 11:11 pm (2211 GMT) Friday, the US Geological Survey said. The quake's epicenter was in a remote area of the High Atlas Mountains.

Tremors were also reportedly felt in the capital Rabat, as well as the coastal cities of Casablanca and Essaouira. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Algeria, where the Algerian Civil Defense said it had not caused any damage or casualties.

The earthquake killed people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua, and Taroudant, Morocco’s Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry further noted that authorities have "mobilized all the necessary resources to intervene and help the affected areas."

After a meeting chaired by King Mohammed VI of Morocco, the palace announced three days of national mourning, with flags to fly at half-mast on all public buildings.
