On Friday, the UN court in The Hague issued six orders in relation to the Israeli bombardment of the Palestinian territory. It stopped short of calling for a full ceasefire, however.
"The ruling, made by the majority of the judges, responds to the widespread concern of the international community to protect civilians, de-escalate the tense situation in Gaza, and ease the humanitarian crisis," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin.
Wang reiterated that China condemns all acts against civilians and opposes all moves that violate international law.
The world court ruled that Israel must take action to prevent genocidal violence by its armed forces; “prevent and punish” the incitement to genocide; and insure that humanitarian aid to Gaza is increased.
The rulings are legally binding, but in practice it has no mechanism to enforce the judgments.
The UN court issued the measures in a case brought by South Africa against Israel under the Genocide Convention.
