Protesters Blockade Department for Business and Trade, BAE Systems to Oppose UK Arms Sales to Israel

News - World: Hundreds of people on Wednesday blocked the entrances to the UK government's Department of Business and Trade in London and BAE Systems sites to oppose the UK’s ongoing weapons sales to Israel.

Protesters gathered at the BAE Systems site in Glasgow on Labor Day in response to calls to block the flow of weapons to Israel.

BAE Systems, a leading UK arms company, produces 15 percent of F-35 components, previously used by the Israeli army in Gaza.

According to Scottish newspaper The National, Type 26 frigates, built by BAE Systems, will feature armor developed in Israel.

A protester stated, "We're enforcing the embargo, showing Scottish solidarity to Palestinians suffering from occupation horrors."

Justin, a Glasgow trade unionist, said, "We have seen workers across the UK taking part in acts of solidarity with Palestine, including donating money, time, and resources, building relationships, and taking direct action."

Closure of arms factories hits profits, noted demonstrators, emphasizing solidarity with Palestine on May Day.

The Independent revealed UK's arms exports to Israel, approx. £57 million worth from 2022 to June 2023.

These figures do not include "open" licenses that do not limit the quantity or value of exports, noting that the UK supplies Israel with up to 15 percent of the value of its F-35 jets used in air strikes.

The Guardian reported that more than 130 British parliamentarians urging Foreign Secretary to halt arms sales to Israel.

Israel launched the war on the coastal sliver on October 7 after Palestinian resistance groups carried out a surprise retaliatory operation into the occupied territories.

Concomitantly with the war, the regime has been enforcing a near-total siege on Gaza, which has reduced the flow of foodstuffs, medicine, electricity, and water into the Palestinian territory into a trickle. Earlier this month, the United Nations warned that in the absence of any changes in the war, the coastal sliver was on course to experience all-out famine.

So far during the military onslaught, the regime has killed more than 34,000 Gazans, most of them women, children, and adolescents.
