In an official statement issued on Sunday, the ministry reaffirmed its rejection of all measures aimed at restricting fishermen’s freedom to pursue their profession within Yemeni territorial waters. It described these actions as clear violations of international principles related to freedom of navigation and fishermen's rights to utilize marine resources lawfully and safely, under international laws and conventions that protect the rights of people to exploit their natural resources.
The statement called on the international community and organizations concerned with human rights and maritime navigation to fulfill their responsibilities by pressuring the UAE occupation forces to cease these violations. It emphasized the need to ensure fishermen's freedom to work without fear of threats or attacks and urged immediate action to lift the illegal restrictions imposed on Yemen's territorial waters in the Arabian Sea. Additionally, it called for sufficient protection for Yemeni fishermen in both the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
The fisheries sector is one of the pillars of economic development in Yemen, owing to its renewable resources that contribute to the sustainability of the gross domestic product. It provides employment opportunities for thousands of Yemenis and supports productive and service activities tied to this vital and strategic sector. These activities generate revenues essential for advancing economic and social development in the country.
The countries involved in the aggression against Yemen have deliberately targeted the fisheries and marine sector as part of their strategy to control Yemen's ports, islands, coasts, and beaches.
Their methods include bombing fishing boats and fish landing centers, confiscating boats in coastal areas under their control, and preventing fishing in areas traditionally designated for the activity. Additionally, they engage in destructive practices such as dredging, looting, and depleting marine resources, further exacerbating the sector's challenges.
