Citing officials, Bloomberg reported that Ukraine expects a "bitter settlement," which implies dropping territorial claims and NATO membership in exchange for security guarantees.
That will take place regardless of the aid Kiev will receive by the administration of outgoing US President Joe Biden in his final weeks in office, according to the report.
Representatives of the US authorities have repeatedly underscored that the Biden administration plans to continue providing Ukraine with military aid until the end of its term in office.
The official cited by Bloomberg said the terms for ending the conflict would be the result of decisions that Biden "took, or failed to take, over the past two years."
Meanwhile, the report said, the paradox of the situation is that its outcome for the Ukrainian authorities will be the same, regardless of whether a settlement agreement is reached under the current or future US administration.
During his annual televised question and answer session and end-of-year press conference on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his country’s readiness to hold negotiations on Ukraine that take into account the current situation on the ground.
In February 2022, Russia launched what it called a special military operation in Ukraine partly to prevent NATO’s eastward expansion after warning that the military alliance was following an “aggressive line” against Moscow.
The Western countries have been fueling the flames of the war with their unchecked delivery of weapons to Ukraine.
Moscow has repeatedly warned that such a flow of weapons to Kiev will only prolong the conflict.
