Jan. 9 Over 9 Years: War Crimes, Martyrs, and Casualties from US-Saudi Aggression on Yemen

Yemen: On January 9 during the years 2016, 2017, and 2019, the US-Saudi aggression continued to commit war crimes with brutal airstrikes and shelling by its mercenaries targeting farms, residential neighborhoods, and homes in the provinces of Sana’a, Sa'adah, and Hodeidah.

These attacks resulted in five martyrs and four wounded, including a woman and her unborn child. The strikes destroyed dozens of homes, vehicles, and farms, displacing families and depriving them of safety and security. Such atrocities have exacerbated suffering in heart-wrenching scenes that reflect a blatant disregard for international norms and demand accountability for war criminals.

Below are the key incidents that occurred on January 9 over the years:

2016: US-Saudi Aggression Targets Civilian Areas in Sa'adah

On this day, the US-Saudi coalition added another war crime to its record by targeting homes, schools, and farms in the Mar’a area of the Baqim district, Sa'adah governorate. Intensive airstrikes and missile and artillery shelling caused extensive destruction, displaced dozens of families, and compounded their suffering.

Peaceful daily life was shattered as explosions turned the quiet Mar’a area into a living nightmare. Homes were destroyed, families were displaced, and the suffering multiplied. The destruction extended to civilian infrastructure, depriving families of shelter, schools, and safety.

2016: Aggression Targets Yemen’s Food Basket in Hodeidah

In the same year, coalition warplanes targeted Hael Saeed Farm in the Kadn district of Hodeidah governorate, a heinous crime aimed at worsening Yemen's food security and exacerbating its humanitarian crisis.

Targeting Farms: A War Crime

Under international humanitarian law, targeting farms is a war crime, as it directly affects civilians' ability to access food and livelihoods. The destruction of farms increases poverty, hunger, and unemployment.

The legal and moral responsibility for these crimes falls on the US-Saudi coalition. These violations demand urgent international action to hold the perpetrators accountable.

2017: Airstrikes in Sa'adah Claim Lives of Civilians

In 2017, coalition airstrikes targeted the Baqim and Haydan districts of Sa'adah governorate, committing three additional war crimes. The attacks caused the deaths of four individuals, including a pregnant woman, and injured three others, destroying homes and farms.

2019: Child Injured in Hodeidah

In 2019, the aggression continued to claim innocent lives. In the Tuhayat district of Hodeidah, a seven-year-old boy named Sharhabil was shot by a sniper while heading to a nearby shop. The bullet entered his abdomen and exited through his leg, leaving him permanently disabled.

2019: Citizen Martyred by Saudi Border Guards

In the same year, Saudi border guards targeted a remote village in the Munabbih district of Sa'adah governorate. A Yemeni farmer heading to his land was struck by sniper fire, killing him instantly and leaving his family in grief.

Call for Justice

The atrocities committed on January 9 across multiple years highlight the suffering inflicted upon Yemen’s civilians. These crimes violate international humanitarian laws and demand urgent action from the international community to stop the aggression, lift the blockade, and hold the perpetrators accountable.

When will the world answer Yemen’s cries for justice and peace?
