Islamic Jihad Warns Israeli Captives Could Return 'in Coffins' If Attacks on Gaza Continue

News - Middle East: The Palestinian Islamic Jihad warns that Israel’s intensified airstrikes on Gaza could lead to the deaths of captives, whose release is set to begin once a ceasefire deal takes effect in the early hours of Sunday.

The Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad movement, urged the families of the captives to demand an end to the airstrikes as “the fate of the captives now lies solely in the hands of the Israeli army.”

"The intensity of Israeli bombing may leave families receiving their loved ones in coffins."

The ceasefire deal, which was announced on Wednesday, will go into effect Sunday, at 8:30 am local time (1:30 a.m. ET).

According to the deal agreed in Qatar, 33 Israeli captives are expected to be freed in exchange for more than 730 Palestinian prisoners during the first phase of the deal.

Three female Israeli captives held in Gaza are expected to be released on the first day, according to two US officials.

At the end of the first phase, which will last for 42 days, 65 captives will remain in Gaza. Their release — some of whom are likely dead— will be negotiated, starting by day 16 of the truce.

The committee of families of the captives, however, said in a Saturday statement that they have called on Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, to act immediately to secure the release of their relatives.

“We urgently call for swift arrangements to ensure all phases of the deal are implemented, and emphasize that negotiations for the next phases must begin before day 16.”

However, a few hours until the ceasefire comes into effect, the regime’s forces are “still relentlessly bombarding Gaza,” Press TV’s correspondent in northern Gaza said in a message on X.

The regime's forces have killed at least 122 people and injured 270 others in Gaza since the deal was announced, according to Gaza’s Civil Defense.

The truce deal is now expected to put an end to more than 15 months of Israel’s brutal campaign of genocide that has taken an immense human toll on the besieged populated Palestinian territory.

Observers believe that Netanyahu, known for his history of ceasefire violations, could jeopardize the deal.
