Jan. 19 Over 9 Years: 40 Casualties from US-Saudi War Crimes in Yemen

Yemen: The US-Saudi aggression deliberately committed war crimes and acts of genocide on January 19 in the years 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2022 through brutal airstrikes and cluster bombs targeting civilians, civilian infrastructure, and public facilities across various regions of Yemen, including Sa'adah, Sana'a, and Taiz.

These crimes resulted in 15 martyrs and 25 injured, the majority of whom were women and children. The attacks terrorized residents, forced them to flee their homes, and caused widespread destruction to dozens of houses, neighborhoods, sports facilities, orphan schools, cemeteries, vehicles, bridges, and main roads. The raids deprived orphans of their right to live and access education, paralyzed daily life, exacerbated suffering, and left deeply tragic scenes in violation of international and humanitarian laws.

Highlights of the Crimes:

2016: Sports City and Cemetery Struck in Sana'a

US-Saudi aggression added another war crime to its record by targeting the Sports City in Al-Thawra District and Al-Hafa Cemetery in Shaub District. The airstrikes caused significant damage to sports halls, nearby homes, shops, and civilian properties, spreading panic among residents and displacing families.

Impact on Sports Facilities: The destruction deprived thousands of Yemeni youth of a vital sports hub, with damages estimated at 3 billion Yemeni riyals.

Cemetery Targeted: The aggression also struck Al-Hafa Cemetery, spreading fear among civilians and leaving psychological scars.

2016: Orphan School in Taiz Bombed

In a horrific war crime, airstrikes on an orphan school in Al-Hareer, Taiz, killed 11 children and injured 10 others. The attack reduced the school to rubble, leaving a heart-wrenching scene of blood-stained walls and destroyed belongings. Survivors, now traumatized, bear the scars of witnessing their peers killed in a place meant to be their safe haven.

2017: Strikes in Sana'a's Nehm and Sanhan Districts

The aggression carried out airstrikes in Nehm and Sanhan, using cluster bombs that killed four civilians and injured 12 others. These attacks displaced dozens of families, destroyed homes, and inflicted lasting trauma on survivors.

2018: Infrastructure Targeted in Sa'adah

Airstrikes destroyed bridges and culverts in Sa'adah, severing key transport routes and isolating entire communities. This targeted destruction worsened humanitarian conditions, restricting access to essential supplies and medical care.

2022: Strikes on Residential Areas and Cleaning Services in Sana'a

The aggression targeted a densely populated area in Al-Thawra and the General Cleaning Administration in Maeen District. The strikes injured women and children, spread panic, and caused severe damage to public services. Sanaa’s mayor condemned the attack on a critical environmental facility, describing it as a deliberate attempt to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.

These crimes over nine years illustrate a systematic pattern of war crimes and violations of international law. They underscore the urgent need for accountability and justice. The documented crimes, along with countless others unrecorded, demand global attention and action to prosecute perpetrators in international courts and bring relief to the victims of Yemen.
