News – Middle East: A German newspaper revealed that there are differences within the corridors of the coalition government in Germany regarding the production of "Eurofighter Typhoon" fighters for Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom had concluded an agreement 5 years ago with BAE Systems, the arms industry, to supply 48 fighter jets of that type, but the agreement was suspended due to the coalition war on Yemen.

After the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside his country's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 2018, Germany suspended arms exports to Saudi Arabia.

On  Saturday, the Welt am Sonntag newspaper said that there is British pressure on Germany to meet the requirements of fighter production for Saudi Arabia, as a third of the components of the Eurofighter Typhoon are German components.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the left-leaning Social Democrats and Finance Minister Christian Lindner are inclined towards allowing exports, but the Green Party and members of the Social Democratic Party are strongly opposed to this step, according to the newspaper report.

An agreement concluded in March 2018 between then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Social Democratic Party prohibited arms sales to any party in the Yemen war, with the exception of some items that had been approved for sale before the signing of the agreement, as well as arms sales that would remain within the importing country.
